Wow, what a productive day! And I really got the hang of this grid, I think. I even went back to a place I had already been…on purpose! My first order of business was finding a school. I went to about 6 and narrowed it down to three. Celas Maya, Miguel Cervantes and Pop Wuj.
And I can’t decide which one to go to. I may just have to go to all three! Celas Maya has great extracurricular activities like traditional cooking classes and hiking tours. So does Pop Wuj, and Pop Wuj is also affiliated with a volunteer project that builds stoves for families in extremely poor communities. And I just liked the person at Miguel Cervantes. Maybe some of you can weigh in and let me know what you think.
After visiting Pop Wuj, I found a little tamalito seller on calle 1a entre 16 u 15 avenidas. I got siete tamalitos con chipolinos for about 35 cents. I have no idea what chipolinos are, they look like chives, but who knows. They’re delicious whatever they are. I still have 6 left.
After my tamalito quest, I went to Entremundos, a clearinghouse of volunteer opportunities in Xela, to see if they had any interesting projects. I am already considering two different projects, but wanted to see if there was anything else available in sustainable tourism or archaeology. After filling out a form, I started chatting with the coordinator about my skills and she couldn’t believe their luck that they just happened to get a call yesterday from an organization that urgently needed someone with graphic design skills to design their 10th anniversary calendar. So off I went to another confusing avenida/calle combo to chat with the directors and voilá, I am now designing a calendar for Proyecto Payaso.
Okay, I’m getting kicked out of this internet cafe so that’s all I can post today! Hasta mañana!
I like Celas Maya for the extra cooking and hiking that they offer. Pop Wuj also offers this but the beautiful courtyard sound nice. I am so excited about how fast you got your first volunteering project! No puedo esperar para que usted pueda regresar y me ensenan como hacer Tamalitos Con Chipolinos! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Thanks Sandra, I like Celas Maya too, and Pop Wuj, and every freakin´school I go to. Ya sé cómo hacer tamalitos … con cebolletas, y con cerdo, y con pollo, y con queso, y con pato. ¡Y tengo mucho masa en el Bronx…necesitamos un noche de Guatemala en Octubre!
Hi Pasqualina, just wanted you to know I’m following the adventures of P. Karsay here so you don’t need to e-mail me any road stories, sounds grand so far. Keep up the great posts, they paint a picture for me and everyone else reading along.
hasta luego~
Muchas gracias, Guillermo!! Just posted some info about my new job…thanks again for following! This is so much fun.
