Today I had my first dip in the gorgeous Atlantic in the Bahía de La Concha (Kontxako Badia). It’s been raining every morning since I got here, with bright breaks of sunshine just as I start work, so I haven’t really had a chance to go swimming yet.
It has taken countless times on European beaches and being around friends I adore and would never think twice about their bathing suit choices, to get over my very very American attitude toward the speedo. I’m generally very speedo-tolerant these days, barely noticing and I only make jokes about white ones and the kind that look like women’s 80s underwear. I think I might even like the ones that look more like boxer briefs than bikinis, you know, the semi-speedo. Now, I only bring this up because there were two really hot Spanish guys on the beach today in their semi-semi-speedos and I was thinking, hey, those aren’t so bad, they’re actually quite nice. Until one of them turned around and blinded me with big white script letters spread across his ass that screamed “Swim the world!”. I don’t know why, but I just couldn’t stop laughing for like a half hour. It didn’t help that he kept running back and forth playing ping pong in front of me. Swim the world, swim the world, swim the world.
Okay, it’s probably some designer moniker like “Juicy” or some pop culture reference I don’t know, you know like “Just do it” or “Keep Calm” or “Where’s the Beef?” Or the name of a school or maybe some competition he won, or maybe he just wants everyone to swim the world, dammit, but I just kept thinking he probably thought it meant something else when he bought it. Like something cool.
Alright I’ll stop now, I shouldn’t be wearing the bathing suit I’m wearing either and hopefully swim-the-world guy is blogging somewhere about me.
Okay, pintxo time…I had four today. But I’m not counting the gazpacho in the glass, even though it did have a quail egg and serrano ham in it.
Spanish spoken: I’m giving this part up. Can’t keep track. All I’m speaking is Spanish, except when I’m working.
Food eaten: Thursday…chorizo sandwich, gazpacho with quail egg and serrano, anchovies, egg with bacon and piquillo pepper and bacon serrano wrapped artichoke. Just had some bread, cheese and olives for dinner. Man I ate a lot of bacon today.
Drinks drank: I’m going to give this up too, just assume I’m always drinking either coffee, wine or cider.
I have discovered your blog thanks to grandma! You have me dying laughing on this one!! You shoulda taken a picture of those Spanish men and that speedo! Love ya lots, I’ll be reading your blog! Xoxo
Oh no, just as I’m flying back! I thought I sent you the link…I just tacked it on to my Guatemala blog as you can see, there are a few more posts before this one, one with my man feet (and don’t worry, I didn’t post pics of my man pits!)
And everyone wanted pictures of those Spanish guys in speedos! xxoo
