“Me gusta” no siempre significa lo que pensé que significaba

Posted on

Okay, so I’ve been walking around the past two weeks misusing ¨me gusta¨ , which I use A LOT.  I just found out today that “Me gusta mi maestro nuevo” doesn’t simply mean “I like my new teacher”. Apparently it means “I LIKE like my new teacher.” I can’t tell you how many people I’ve been LIKE liking all around Xela. Every single payaso I have been working with over the past two weeks, the old guy who sold me sausages, Lupita, Ilse,  11-year old Carlito, Gordo…

Speaking of cutie pie Gordo…me gusta mucho!

So I learned the correct construction for just liking someone. “Me cae bien mi maestro nuevo“. Which means I like my new teacher solely for his teacherly characteristics. No wonder when I was talking to Stef and used the me gusta construction about Carlos, he winked and teased me about his “guapo“ness.

Anyway, completely conquered the future today!  Even all 12 irregular verbs. Moved on to direct object pronouns, which are really confusing to me.  We also talked about history, movies, music and Mayan textile art today, but no matter how I tried to keep the conversation on otros subjetos, we somehow always get back to military politics. I actually don’t mind that much because he has some really interesting stories and I’m learning a lot of vocabulary.

Gotta run now, having dinner with Carol, who I’m sure I’ve me gustaed once or twice.  Ay dios mio.  I’m just so happy Carlos taught me this before I me gusta the wrong person.  Yikes.

  1. Hi Tricia – Your mom sent me your link. I just read it and really am jealous. Wish I was 40 years younger and had your guts. Do they have more than 24 hours in a day there – You seem to do an awful lot in one day. Sounds like you made a good choice and are enjoying yourself. Just be careful. Love Aunt Georgia

    1. Hi Aunt Georgia!

Why don´t you come down and meet me? We could go to markets together, you can live with me and the clowns, I think there may be an extra room open. So happy my mom sent you the link, it´s so fun to write and I love it when my family writes back to me! I will be very careful, promise. Lotsa love, Tricia

  2. Should have asked before starting the trip!!! Esta’ claro, no?

Anyway, I’m impressed by a couple of things:
1- the nice pictures you uplaod in your blog, this means that the camera was really worth the money or that you are photoshopping them in that remote country?
2- your Spanish is REALLY improving and becoming good (written at least, but I believe spoken will be good as well); the only thing I am worried about is the south americanisation of it… it sounds a bit like a dirt proper Spanish! 😉

    Come back soon.
    Max

    1. Sí, sí, claro que sí. I should have asked tons of stuff before I left. I just think it´s funny that no one has ever corrected me.

1 – I can barely upload photos on these archaic operating systems, forget about finding any photo editing software. That camera is truly amazing…
2 – ¿De verdad, lo piensás? I still feel like I´m speaking like a cavewoman. My teacher understands me. The clowns understand me. Some very small children on the bus understood me today. And yes, I will be speaking more South Americanish, which means I thankfully won´t have develop a lisp.

I´ll be back before you know it, but you are going to have to speak with me in Spanish and assess how much I´ve learned. Next…ITALIANO!
      Ciao,
